Kawerak, Inc. is a non-profit tribal consortium representing the twenty Inuit (Eskimo) tribes of the Bering Strait Region of Alaska. Kawerak’s Wireless WALRUS (Web Access Links for Remote User Services) project seeks to create easy, convenient access to information about tribal services, programs, and cultural history using a wireless, digital network infrastructure. WALRUS will enhance and expand Kawerak’s rudimentary website to include convenient links to information about all of the available programs and the means to apply for these services electronically.
The project will also place high-speed Internet-connected computers in convenient locations for each of the twenty Eskimo tribes throughout the 26,000 square mile region. The networked computers will provide community members and tribal government officials with the means to interact with each other, share information, and proactively develop programs. The Eskimo people have lived in this region for at least 3,000 years. A special program on Eskimo Heritage will allow tribal members to participate in the preservation of their traditions, culture, and three distinct language groups of the region.
